Why People Like You Join The Rotary Club of
Ottawa
Rotary is non-political, we welcome men and women executives
and professionals from all races and religions.
1. Friendship. In an increasingly complex world, Rotary
provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friends and
fellowship. It is one of the two reasons why Rotary began in 1905.
8. Continuing Education. Each week at Rotary there is a
program designed to keep members informed as to what is going on in the
community, the nation and the world. Different speakers, different
topics.
2. Business Development and
Networking. The second original reason for
Rotary's beginning. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a
cross-section of every business in the community. Its members come from
all walks of life. Rotarians help one another, and collectively help
others.
9. Fun. Rotary is fun. A lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The
club projects are fun; social activities are fun; and service to others
is fun.
3. Personal Growth and Development. Membership in Rotary
continues one's growth and education in human relations and personal
development.
10. Public Speaking. Rotary develops confidence and skill in
public communication skills.
4. Leadership Development. Rotary is an organization of
leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a
college education in Leadership: learning how to motivate, influence and
lead other leaders.
11. Citizenship in the World. Every Rotarian wears a pin that
says "Rotary International". And every Rotarian is welcomed, in fact
encouraged to attend any of over 31,000 clubs in over 166 nations in the
world. In fact, there are few places on the globe which do not have a
Rotary club. Rotarians find instant friends in both your own community
and anywhere in the world.
5. Citizenship in the Community. Membership in a Rotary club
makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists
of many of the most active citizens of any community.
12. Assistance when traveling. Because there are Rotary clubs
everywhere, many a Rotarian who has needed a doctor, lawyer, hotel,
dentist, advice, etc. while traveling, has found someone quickly through
Rotary.
6. Entertainment:
Every Rotary club and district has parties and activities that provide
diversion in one's business life. Rotary hold conferences and
conventions locally and internationally that provide entertainment in
addition to Rotary information, education and service. Spouses and
families are welcome.
13. Family Programs:
Rotary provides one of the world's largest youth exchange programs; high
school and college clubs for future Rotarians, many opportunities for
spouse involvement.
7. Prestige:
Rotary members are prominent people: leaders of business, the professions,
art, government, sports, military, religion, and all disciplines. Rotary
is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. It's
ranks include executives, managers; professional people who make decisions
and influence policy.
14. The Opportunity to
Serve: Rotary is a service club. Its
business is mankind. Its product is service. Rotarians provide
community service to both local and international communities. This
is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian; the chance to do
something for somebody else and to sense the self-fulfillment that comes
in the process and return of that satisfaction to one's own life.

The Membership Process
Often a person being considered for
membership is invited by a member/sponsor to attend one or
more club meetings to learn more about Rotary. The sponsor
may then submit the name of the candidate to the club's
membership committee.
An individual who is interested in
membership but doesn't know any Rotarians can contact the
club directly, see below.
Classifications: professional
representation
Rotary uses a classification system to
establish and maintain a vibrant cross-section or
representation of the community's business, vocational, and
professional interests among members and to develop a pool
of resources and expertise to successfully implement service
projects. This system is based on the founders' paradigm of
choosing cross-representation of each business, profession,
and institution within a community.
A classification describes either the
principal business or the professional service of the
organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarian's
own activity within the organization. Some examples of
classifications include: high schools, universities, eye
surgery, banking, pharmaceutical retailing,
petroleum-distribution, and insurance agency.
Currently
we have several Classifications open, and are actively looking to fill
them
